Upgrade instructions

  1. Important note: Because we are not registered with Microsoft, we are considered to be an "unknown publisher". When you run the News Rover installation program under Windows, it may pop up a "Smart Screen" warning you that you are running a program from an unknown publisher. Click "More Info" and select the option to run the installation program. The installation program has been tested and certified clean by Windows Defender, Hitman Pro and other anti-virus programs. It does not pose a risk. The warning is only because you are running a program downloaded from a publisher not known by Microsoft.
  2. Download either the 32-bit or 64-bit installation program using the links below.
  3. If you are upgrading from the 32-bit version of News Rover to the 64-bit version, use the Windows uninstall procedure to uninstall the old version before installing the 64-bit version. Note: When asked if you want to delete News Rover's data files, answer No to preserve your current configuration and messages.
  4. If you are upgrading to the 32-bit version, you do not need to uninstall the old version.
  5. Run the installation program. When prompted for the folder where News Rover should be installed, put the 32-bit version in "\Program  Files  (x86)\NewsRover\". Put the 64-bit version in "\Program  Files\NewsRover\".

Firewall Settings

When you install a News Rover upgrade, the NewsRover.exe program file is replaced by the new version. If you are using a firewall program like ZoneAlarm or Norton Personal Firewall, you need to tell the firewall program to allow the new NewsRover.exe program to make outgoing Internet connections. If you don't, you will likely see a message saying News Rover is unable to translate the name of the Usenet news server or it is unable to connect to the news server.
